lately

I've sat down to blog several times this week - an actual catch up of what's been happening and how the girls are and what I've been thinking about - but I kept getting totally overwhelmed and ditching it all.  I was complaining way more than I'm okay with.  For some reason, I haven't wanted this blog to be a place where I share what's difficult or stressin' me out.  Yes budgeting is frustrating, the house hasn't sold, we live in a basement, my children are shy and I don't know how to help, blah blah blahhhhhh.  But there are so many wonderful things in this life of mine and we're doing great.  I've loved having this space as a way to record those gifts that make the burdens of life seem lighter.  It's for capturing the girls in the stages they're in and using it as a way to see past the frustrations of parenting.  Because of that, it might look like we're perfect around here.  Well ... we're not.

I like the way my friend, Melissa, journaled today and I'm going to follow suit.
Right Now :: I'm enjoying the most peaceful, uninterrupted afternoon working away in my sewing corner, listening to Christmas music, cutting out fabric and matching up colors to make a string of new dollies for the shop.  Levi took both girls to the swimming pool today (brave man) and it must be going well because they're still gone!
Loving :: The weather here.  It's more like the coast with low, grey clouds and rainy days than it usually is, but I am loving that we can still go for walks and play on the swings and quickly drive off in the van without spending twenty minutes hacking away at ice.  Thank you, BC.
Last Item Off the Sewing Machine :: I just finished up these two little lovelies.  They're a custom order for a couple of Filipino sisters and I think they turned out so cute.  I'm really enjoying the pace that my little shop is keeping me going at.  Thanks for all your support, friends, and for pointing out my shop to your circles!
Hanging on Our Walls :: I am loving the latest outpouring of Avery's creativity.  It's amazing to watch how her drawing is changing and how her creativity is becoming more detailed and project focussed.  And oh those fingers ... those many many fingers.  We've gotten back into drawing and painting mini murals.  Hospitals and schools, playgrounds and picnics.  She asked if we could draw things that she could be when she grows up: a musician, a firefighter, a swim teacher, and an art teacher were the ideas that day.  I still think she has a bent towards the surgeon route.  She's always adding blood and scalpels to the ever popular 'mommy in delivery' scenes (her idea, not mine).
Keeping us Busy :: The baby is making all the difference in gradually making every day feel much more busy than usual without me actually knowing why.  She's constantly moving, yelling, drooling, laughing, squirming, climbing, exploring.  We feel like we have a pet billy goat around since she'll climb onto anything low enough that stands still long enough.  Crouch down to open a drawer and Ella will beetle over and be perched on your knee in a flash.  Stand too close and she'll grab onto the back of your knees and push you around like a walker.  She is days away from walking on her own.  She can do a few steps at a strong forward tilt, but she's just as stubborn as her sister was and will surely wait until she's good and confident before showing off her skills.

Making me Merry :: I'm full into listening to Christmas music and doing whatever I can to begin drawing myself into the most wonderful time of the year.  The start of advent is one week away and I haven't prepared, like most years, in the way that I'd hoped.  I'm thinking of my favorite festive things I have packed tight in boxes in our storage locker.  I took a trip out there today, along with my Dad and Nephew, to pick up our winter tires and look for a few needed items.  But alas, those holly-jolly-making boxes were deeply buried.
Appreciating :: Levi.  His job is going good and he's been working hard to finish ploughing through the ginormous mortgage broker course material.  This week he finished with the math-heavy assignments and he's now hoping to head down to Vancouver to take the final test at the end of this month.  This will make him certified and allow him to do more in the office than he can do at this point.  I'm so grateful for what he's doing.  We know it's not teaching, but it means we can be here for a season, catch up a little bit, take a deep breath and maybe even buy a coffee.   And yes, Levi was reverse-molting for movember (for the sake of solidarity).  The girls liked to wiggle their fingers over it.  He shaved it off this morning - finally impatient with it.  It doesn't photograph so well ...

Happy weekending to you!

first snow

Shuffling into the kitchen to warm up some milk for Ella this morning I gasped when I looked out the window.  Snow!  There's something so hushed and calming about that first snowy morning, to stand at the window a moment before moving on with regular tasks.  It's a good day for running errands, driving past the whitened forest and feeling the wet flakes as we walk from place to place.

It's a good day for pumpkin spice muffins at breakfast.  For cloud dough to build and sculpt when the first snow is too wet for snowmen.  For mailing packages, and for picking up some for me.  For wandering the mall that's starting to look festive.  For an impromptu book purchase because it was impossible to resist.  For shopping together to fill our 'operation' shoeboxes.  For playing ballerina with her and keeping my secret that she'll get to see the Nutcracker ballet in just one month.  For christmas oranges.  And maybe, just a little tiny bit, for some j-i-n-g-l-e bells.

first birthday

Last week we celebrated Ella's first birthday with a simple little party at home with just us, her Nana and her Gramma.  She was a happy little clam all day as we went to preschool in the morning and had a quiet play day at home in the afternoon.  Supper was a roast chicken and sautéed french beans and red potatoes - not necessarily Ella's choice, but she'll eat pretty near anything we give her.
Her eyes grew wide at the one little birthday candle.  Avery and I baked a simple strawberry cake in the afternoon - perfect for a simple first birthday.  No frosting thank you.
She devoured her slice of cake and patiently worked at her scoop of ice cream with her little fingers until it was time to lick the plate clean.
She was treated to a few new goodies - dollies and books and fun new bath toys, a great big teddy bear and a new backpack carrier that we can use to take her on walks and hikes (a second hand score found by Nana).  All around a happy first birthday for our sweet girly.

one year

6th day - - - 6th month - - - 12th month

The whole "stick a baby in a basket and calmly snap photos" idea went over swimmingly for the first two installations, but Ella was not so easily persuaded this time around.  No surprise there.  As far as I'm concerned - they're perfect.  Angry tears and all.  My how you've grown, sweet baby.

Happy one year, Ella!  You charm the socks off us all every day.  You're ready to move, stand, walk and it won't be long before you're tearing around on two feet.  You're starting to feed yourself with a spoon - with no results, but my aren't you clever?  You've got a little sparkiness in you.  You laugh like an imp when we say no-no.  You laugh with pride when you try something new.  You laugh with glee when your sister runs circles around you.  You laugh with hearty appetite when we let you chomp your mouth down on our arms and cheeks.  You love your baby dollies and looking at books, knocking down blocks and exploring.  You shake your fists and yell when something is taken from you.  You crawl through the house with a toy plugged in your mouth like a makeshift soother.  You have 8 pearly little teeth.  You sleep really well and nap twice a day, with pink, raggy bunny tucked in your fist.  You're a darling baby, Ella.  We love you!

shop shellbell

I've been working away over the past couple months and today I clicked the button to "open up shop" on my first ever online store!
I've focused primarily on little dollies for now, along with a handful of other items, and have my lists going for what's to come next.  Maybe some little buddy boy dolls, maybe some more play kitchen goodies, more dollies, bags, purses, etc.  I'm fully aware that this little shop might stay as stocked as the day it started, or that it might clean out quicker than I can keep it filled.  Either way, I'm so pleased to have done what I set out to do - Open Up Shop!  You can find me on etsy here:

Come have a look around!  For friends and family, I'm also receptive to inquiries about custom made items or special orders for multiple items.  I might not be able, but you can always ask!  Also, if you're one of my local friends looking to pick something from my shop, feel free to message me about setting up a special listing that reflects $0 shipping and we can arrange pick-up or delivery instead.

thanksgiving

This year my family had Thanksgiving dinner in the park.  Mom brought warmed and sliced turkey, buns and gravy.  My sisters and I brought sandwich fixins, a few different salads, veggies and cheeses and pickles, wild rice casserole, pear ciders, sparkling juice, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bars, and chocolate almond caramel bark.  A thanksgiving picnic in the great outdoors!  It was a little chilly and a little windy, but the cousins had the wide open air to be boisterous and energetic in and the food crumbs could be swept off the table.
Us adults kept migrating further along the park to stay in the warm sunbeams while the kids ran free in the playground, making up their own games and getting into trouble.  Both Levi and Ella sadly had to miss out on the picnic day.  They were kept at home with coughs and colds that seemed too rough to let them out to play.
With Levi's family we enjoyed a perfect, relaxing holiday together on Sunday.  Some came home, and some were missed.  The girls got their fill of Uncle Ian time and received fun goodies from Auntie Rhonda who couldn't make it out.  We skyped with Papa in Korea and then picked up Oma to come join us for the evening's feast.  We enjoyed a delicious dinner together - the perfect turkey, mashed yams, french green beans, mandarin salad, apple stuffing, wine, pumpkin pie and more.  At one point in the afternoon I even found myself time to sit upstairs in the quiet with a good book.  Ella was napping and the guys were downstairs with Avery and it was too perfect an opportunity to ignore.  It was a good weekend for pausing regular routine, hanging out together, going for walks, and playing games in the evening.  Lovely holiday!  I'm so thankful for our two big families!

hello october

Hello October.  I love when you finally come around.
The girl is wearing cords and boots,
the baby's wearing orange.
 We go walking,
looking for color,
 finding treasures,
 observing,
learning,
collecting.
It's not hard to feel pretty thankful.
